Charleston County Parks’ Wheel to Surf event returns to Folly

Special to The Current

Fun, physical activities, and sports should be a part of life for everyone, and the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) strives to provide all residents of the community with the opportunity to enjoy them. In an effort to offer surfing to individuals with physical disabilities, CCPRC partners with Adaptive Expeditions to host its third annual Wheel to Surf event this month.

Held from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, participants can ride the waves with expert assistance and modified surfing equipment at Folly Beach County Park. Wheel to Surf at Folly Beach County Park is part of a series of clinics conducted by the experts at Ocean Cure of Wilmington, NC, and The Adaptive Surf Project of Myrtle Beach, SC.

“We have been fortunate to partner with Ocean Cure, The Adaptive Surf Project, Coastal Adaptive Sports and Wheel to Surf to offer an adaptive surfing opportunity for the Charleston Community for the past two years,” said Susie Goudy, assistant director of recreation for CCPRC. “These amazing non-profit organizations provide the expertise, equipment and enthusiasm that has made this program such a great success.”

Launched in 2012, CCPRC’s AccessABILITY meets the needs of community members with limitations. Through recreation programming, including Wheel to Surf and other ventures, CCPRC continues to serve the needs of this community. CCPRC strives to help participants develop skills that will enable them to participate in recreation programs throughout the year.

Admission for the Wheel to Surf clinic is free, but all interested participants are required to pre-register in order to participate. Volunteers are being recruited for this event. For more information on volunteering with CCPRC, call (843) 795-4386 or visit CharlestonCountyParks.com/Volunteer.
