beach blotterThe following were taken from actual incident reports filed last week by the City Folly Beach Public Safety Department. These are not convictions and the names of businesses, complainants, and suspects have been left off to protect the innocent. All suspects are  innocent until proven guilty, of course.

Thursday, March 5 | FOUND X-Rays
The Responding Officer (R/O) was dispatched to an area near the Lee Westbury Bridge around 2 p.m. in reference to Lost/Found Property. Upon arrival, he discovered multiple personal items strewn across Folly Road, including a beach bag, numerous papers, x-ray films, magazines, a makeup bag, computer discs and a checkbook. The paperwork led the officer to contact a 31-year-old woman who said she was in New York and hadn’t been to Folly Beach in some time. She said she had no idea how her belongings got there, but that she would pick up her stuff that weekend.

Friday, March 6 | IRS Scam
The R/O was contacted by a 68-year-old woman around 2 p.m. in reference to a suspicious phone call. She told the officer a man claiming to be “Officer Ron Black from the IRS” called her stating he would issue a warrant for her arrest for tax evasion if she didn’t call him back. The victim did not call back, but called police instead. The R/O googled the phone numbers given in the call and found one of them reported as a known scam artist making phony tax evasion calls.

Saturday, March 7 | What Marijuana?
The R/O was on routine patrol around 12:20 a.m. when he stopped a vehicle for a speeding violation near Crosby’s on Folly Road. As he approached the vehicle, he smelled the “odor of marijuana” coming from the vehicle. He asked the driver if they had been smoking pot, but she said she didn’t know what he was talking about. He pulled the three occupants — two females, one male, all age 17 — out of the car and stood them by his patrol car while he searched their vehicle. The officer eventually located two pipes – one copper, one glass – typically used for smoking marijuana inside the car’s driver’s side visor and rear seat storage pocket. All three subjects then freely admitted they had been smoking marijuana earlier that night. The two females were issued citations for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and the driver was issued a warning for speeding.

Sunday, March 8 | Suspicious Dog Relocation
The R/O was dispatched to an East Arctic residence around 11 a.m. in reference to Suspicious Activity. Upon arrival, he met with the 45-year-old male resident who said he had his dog locked in a kennel in the bed of his pickup truck, which was parked in the garage under his house the night before. He said around 1 a.m., the dog started barking and then he heard loud knocking and the doorbell ring at his front door. The man went to the door to find an unknown male who said to him, “take the dog inside, or I’m taking it with me.” The complainant went outside to find the dog had been removed from the kennel and tied to the truck bed. At that point, the complainant brought the dog inside and the subject left the area.

Tuesday, March 10 | This Drunk on a Tuesday?!
The R/Os were dispatched to The Tides hotel around 2:20 a.m. in reference to a Disorderly Subject screaming and yelling. Upon arrival, they were met by hotel security, who pointed out the male subject, who was pacing back and forth at the shoreline, in and out of the water, and yelling “something about ‘killing someone, I’m going to kill him.’” One of the officers shined his flashlight onto the subject as they approached him and the subject told them to stop. An officer attempted to question the man, asking why was he screaming and where did he live. The subject refused to answer questions and became defiant and aggressive towards the officers. The R/O noticed the man was holding something shiny in his hand and unholstered his Taser for protection. The subject was ordered to submit to being handcuffed and complied. The silver object was a pair of glasses. The man was arrested for Disorderly Conduct and issued a summons for court.

Wednesday, March 11 | Bum Rush the Cops
The R/O was dispatched to a West Ashley Ave. residence around 3 a.m. in reference to a disturbance. Upon arrival, be met with the 53-year-old male complainant who said the 39-year-old female subject (who was still on the scene) had made several threats towards him, including cutting his throat and burning his house down. The complainant showed the officer a video of the subject being aggressive and slamming things down, throwing things around, yelling, cursing and making threats. The officer learned the subject was off her medication, and called for EMS to pick her up for a mental evaluation. Throughout the confrontation with the complainant and R/O, the subject was drinking beer. The officer informed her EMS was on the way, that she should stop drinking, and took the beer away from her. The subject then grabbed another beer and attempted to drink the whole can before the officer could take it from her. The officer told the subject to sit down and be calm. The woman acted like she was going to comply, but then rushed the officer. The officer clotheslined the subject, knocking her to the ground. She got up and tried to rush the officer again, but he took her to the ground and cuffed her. EMS arrived shortly after, and the subject was taken to MUSC for a psych evaluation.

Saturday, March 14 | Wedding Jitters
The R/O was dispatched to an East Ashley residence around 12:30 p.m. in reference to an alleged Assault. Upon arrival, he met with the 17-year-old female victim who said she was at another beach house (her family had rented four for her father’s wedding) when she got into an argument with the 47-year-old mother of her father’s fiancée. The victim said the subject was adamant that she wear her hair in a certain way for the wedding, but the girl wanted to wear it differently. The older woman then began screaming and cursing at the younger, who tried to disengage by going to a downstairs room. The subject followed her down there and grabbed her by the shoulders and began shaking the victim and cursing at her. The subject continued to woman-handle the victim back upstairs and let her go when the two came into sight of other family members. The girl escaped outside, but the subject followed her and continued to yell obscenities at her. At this point, the victim began filming the subject with her cell phone. The R/O observed the subject right up in the victim’s face, yelling and cursing. At some point the camera pans to the ground. The officer believed the subject was putting her hands on the victim during this time. The victim had minor, yet visible injuries. The family diffused the situation, and the victim was advised to retain the video if she decided to press charges.
