Folly mourns loss of Dale Antley, who faced the end with style and grace

special to The Current

A small island has a way of holding its people close. And when it loses even one, the absence is felt in quiet, familiar places — along Center Street, at City Hall meetings, in the rhythm of waves rolling onto the shore.

For many on Folly, Dale Antley’s story became one of quiet strength.

Two years ago, Antley was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive and often devastating form of brain cancer. Known by many as “The Dude,” Antley faced a long battle that tested both body and spirit. Those who knew him or followed his journey on social media watched him meet this moment with remarkable resolve and, amazingly, always with a smile.

Through it all, Antley remained present, grounded, and deeply connected to the life he loved, even as the disease progressed.

Over the last two years, Dale’s loving wife, Heather, often shared updates and photos of their travels and challenges. In every photo, Dale is donning what Heather described as “that full-face, eye-crinkling smile.”

On March 24, Heather announced that Dale had passed the previous night.

The marquee of the Sand Dollar Social Club simply read: RIP Dale Antley.

Friends and neighbors took to social media to remember a man who chose gratitude over despair, who focused on moments rather than milestones. Whether it was time spent with loved ones or simply being near the water, Antley leaned into what mattered most. His fight was not defined by the illness itself, but by the way he carried it with dignity, steadiness, and an appreciation for the everyday.

His passing leaves an undeniable void in the community — the kind that’s not always loud, but deeply felt. In a place like Folly Beach, where lives often intersect in small but mean-ingful ways, Antley’s presence was part of the island’s fabric.

Dale Antley taught the island a lesson in perseverance and presence, a reminder to hold tight to the simple, meaningful parts of life, and to always let your smile light the way.
