Annual youth surf contest will be held July 12

from Staff Reports

One of Folly’s most beloved summer traditions returns this month. McKevlin’s Surf Shop will host its annual Gromfest on Saturday, July 12. Open to surfers 18 and under, Gromfest is a laid-back competition that puts the spotlight on young talent from across the Lowcountry and beyond. It’s a day dedicated to stoke, sportsmanship, and the next generation of wave riders.

First held more than two decades ago, Gromfest has grown into a cornerstone event on Folly Beach, fostering not just a love of surfing, but a strong sense of community. The format includes divisions for different age groups, and while judges keep score, the emphasis is on fun, inclusion, and encouraging newcomers to the sport.

In addition to bragging rights, competitors will have the chance to win surf gear, gift cards, and other prizes donated by McKevlin’s and local sponsors. Even those not riding can enjoy the beachside festivities, with music, giveaways, and plenty of sunscreen to go around.

Gromfest will be held Saturday, July 12. Registration is open July 10 at McKevlin’s or online at www.mckevlins.com. Space is limited, and spots tend to fill quickly.
