Her Own Personal Paradise — Gerrie Delaney makes the most of her life on Folly

I first met Gerrie Delaney at a retirement party at my neighbor’s house, where the women received hats that read “The Real Housewives of Folly Beach.” There were about 20 hats, and someone took a group photo of everyone wearing them. That night, I met several new people and immediately bonded with them since we shared common ground. Living as neighbors naturally made us friends.

Folly Current: Where were you born, and how long have you been tied to Folly?
Gerrie Delaney: I’m originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and have lived in Turn of River across the bridge for two years now. My daughter moved into the dorms at College of Charleston 20 years ago, and from that day forward, I always knew I would find my way here someday. Both of my kids live on James Island.

FC: What’s your favorite thing about Folly Beach?
GD: Folly is eclectic and lively. I regularly pinch myself because I’m in awe that I live in paradise. Between waking up to dolphins swimming in the river, beach walks all year round, and the many amazing events that we have here on the island. Life is good! I’m an avid gardener with a career background in recreational therapy and horticulture therapy. The climate and growing season here allow for a unique and diverse landscape. I am in heaven!!

FC: Share a story you are fond of about Folly Beach.
GD: It’s difficult to pick one. Over the summer, I was able to attend a turtle hatching. We were able to guide two hatchlings into the ocean. It was a beautiful experience.

FC: In your opinion what is the most important issue facing our community today?
GD: Because of the recent political environment, our community has been fractured. We are all so much more alike than different, yet silly political issues divide us. I’d like to see more of a single team. Let’s all be proud to be part of the 29439 family and do things together!

FC: If you were in charge, how would you fix it?
GD: Let’s all be a force for cohesive living. Let’s all be a light for coexistence at its best. We start by volunteering for groups and activities and getting to know our neighbors on a deep, personal level. The mahjong group has now grown to 30 members in just two short years. Many in the group never played before but had the courage to come and be a part of it. I can say we need more classes or groups like mahjong, but really, we just need more friends to show up. I teach the SilverSneakers class, a cardio class at the community center on Center Street, with people from ages 40 to 90. We also have a yoga class. Last week I went on a bird walk. Twelve neighbors showed up to look for birds. There is so much to do for free here, and I highly recommend that all locals find something for themselves here on the island. If it’s not offered … share it and see who wants to do it too!
