Tropical Dots artist Kathy Nicklaus remembered for her life, art, and commitment to community

Folly Beach mourned the loss of one of its kindest and most creative souls when a memorial mass was held for Tropical Dots artist and Folly Beach Arts and Crafts Guild board member Kathy Nicklaus on March 26 at Our Lady of Good Council Church. Nicklaus, whose colorful works mainly consisted of bright, tropically painted and dotted wooden objects, was a long-time guild member, active Folly Beach resident, and friend to many in our community.

Following the memorial a reception was held across the street at the Folly Beach Baptist Church. Nicklaus was very active in both the Catholic and Baptist churches on Folly. She was a member of the Folly Beach Civic Club, the Folly Garden Club, and many more community-based organizations.

Only a few weeks prior to her passing, Nicklaus was preceded in death by her loving husband Jim, who was known to many as generous landlord and fixture at many Folly Beach activities.

In lieu of flowers, friends and members of the community can pay their respects by making donations to Habitat for Humanity or the Disabled American Veterans. Cards can be addressed to: The Family of Kathy Nicklaus, c/o Our Lady of Good Counsel, P.O. Box 1257, Folly Beach, SC 29439.
