September is upon us, and school is back in session. Football returns and Fall is on the horizon. The Folly Beach music scene, however, remains as strong and vibrant as it was in mid-summer.
Surf Bar on East Cooper has put together a powerhouse lineup for the Labor Day weekend. The popular soul and R&B band New Galaxy kicks off the celebration Friday night (Sept. 4). Saturday showcases the return of Sideshow Americans, who in a short time together have grown into one of the most polished and powerful Americana bands in the Charleston area. Whiskey Diablo brings their infectious brand of rockabilly and “gutter-country” Sunday evening to wrap up another Labor Day celebration.
St. James Gate has been building an enjoyable and impressive music experience throughout the summer. With evening acoustic shows in The Garden, full bands on Thursdays in The Green Room, and DJs over the weekend, The Gate has something for everyone to enjoy. Saturday, Sept. 5, Dallas Baker and Fuller Condon take to The Garden for a special acoustic performance. The Green Room welcomes Lowcountry Blues winners Sufferin’ Moses Thursday the 10th and Milwaukee Celtic-rock band Whiskey of the Damned on Sept. 24. Fridays in September have Charleston favorite DJ Elementz spinning, and Saturdays DJ Trav gets behind the decks.
Loggerhead’s Beach Grill keeps their solid music lineup going through September, both on the deck during the day and inside at night. Their big Labor Day weekend features The Dubplates, Elise Testone, and Lionz of Zion. On Saturday, Sept. 12, local favorites Bringers of the Dawn take the stage inside. Friday, Sept. 25 and Saturday, Sept. 26, Loggerheads welcomes Ohio country artist Cliff Cody back for two shows on the deck.
Planet Follywood keeps the groove going each Sunday evening with Jess Strickland and Acoustic Tiger. September boasts a solid lineup, including Dan Clamp with Nautical Audio on Friday the 11th, The Jimmies on Friday, Sept. 18, and Folly favorite Teresa “Sweet T” Parrish on Saturday, Sept. 26.
The popular Sunday Jazz on the Edge Series finds a new home in September, as they move from The Grill and Island Bar to Locklear’s Beach City Grill at the Folly Beach pier.
The Folly Beach Crab Shack continues its popular weekly rotation in September, featuring guitarist Jeff Houts Wednesday evenings, The Island Duo Thursdays, and Calhoun’s Calling Friday nights.
Chico Feo welcomes the return of the popular Asheville, N.C. band Red Honey on Saturday, Sept. 5, and features Nate Edwin and Marc Horne as Deadwin on Wednesday evenings, and blues man Zach Quillen Thursdays.
Summer may be winding down, but the music never stops on The Edge of America.
