The Folly Beach community is mourning the loss of one of their own. Friends and family said good-bye to longtime Folly resident Allen Hatchell late last month.

Hatchell loved life on Folly Beach. It was his home for the last 17 years. But his love for Folly started long before that. He first fell in love with the island while still in high school and started making day-trips to Folly to pursue his passion for surfing.

Hatchel graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1997 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Media Arts. He loved being behind the camera as much as being in the water. When he wasn’t surfing, he was often found throwing a football on the beach with his friends and nephews. Those that knew him say he was a fast friend to everyone he met.

Allen was a lively character, known for having a heart of service and used his many talents to help many of the island’s residents. He undoubtedly left his mark on the hearts of many here on the beach and will not be forgotten. Fare thee well, Allen, you will be missed.

A celebration of life is planned for Sunday, Aug. 29. In lieu of flowers the family has created up a gofundme account to help cover memorial costs. Please contact his sister Caroline Hatchell for more details at hatchell.caroline@gmail.com.
