The third annual Walk and Talk for Hope raises awareness about suicide

from Staff Reports

The third Annual Walk & Talk For Hope will be held o Folly Beach from 10 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Nov. 25. The event is traditionally held the Saturday after Thanksgiving and is an opportunity to invite family and friends to get together at a dedicated time to walk and talk about the stuff that really matters.

The event is one of Honor Connor/Hold on to Hope’s signature programs. The 501(c)(3) was created to provide education and support for those affected by suicide. It also provides opportunities for everyone to have deeper conversations of each other to help eliminate the stigma around mental health with the goal to have less loss as a result of suicide.

Local organizer Zach Larichiuta joined Honor Connor as a volunteer because he says it’s an issue  that is near and dear to his heart with the loss of his nephew Connor Johnson who died from suicide in 2016.

“From time to time, as we all may do, he appeared to be dealing with mental health issues and while I tried to be there for him, I didn’t always know what to say or how to say it,” admits Larichiuta. “Honor Connor has helped shed light for me by knowing it is okay to ask questions and just start the conversation. They have done an unbelievable job creating programs and tools to help those people who are personally dealing with their own issues as well as providing resources for friends and family who want to help but may not know how or what to do. I am very proud to be part of HonorConnor.org and the message they share – Start the Conversation and Stop the Stigma.”

Each registered walker will receive Honor Connor’s ‘Conversation Starter – Digital Tool Kit’ to support you starting the conversation on the day of the walk, and everyday. If you can not attend in person, you are encouraged to join virtually.

The third annual Walk and Talk for Hope will be held Saturday. Nov, 25 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Check in at 103 W Erie Ave. then follow the signs to the beach. For more information or to register, visit www.walkandtalkforhope.org.
